1761-1834. Scottish administrator in
Australia. He succeeded Bligh as governor of
New South Wales in 1808, raised the
demoralized settlement to prosperity, and did
much to rehabilitate ex-convicts. In 1821 he
returned to Britain in poor health, exhausted
by struggles with his opponents. Lachlan
River and Macquarie River and Island are
named after him. Macquarie Island is a
Tasmanian dependency, some 1,370 km/850 mi SE
of Hobart, and uninhabited except for an
Australian government research station.
