  2. Australia. He succeeded Bligh as governor of
  3. New South Wales in 1808, raised the
  4. demoralized settlement to prosperity, and did
  5. much to rehabilitate ex-convicts. In 1821 he
  6. returned to Britain in poor health, exhausted
  7. by struggles with his opponents. Lachlan
  8. River and Macquarie River and Island are
  9. named after him. Macquarie Island is a
  10. Tasmanian dependency, some 1,370 km/850 mi SE
  11. of Hobart, and uninhabited except for an
  12. Australian government research station.
